Cold Blank

A group that has really caught my attention lately is Cold Blank. It actually makes me feel silly for being a DJ and not being very familiar with their music earlier. The Los Angeles duo Christopher Gaspar and Manuel Luquin have a whole catalog of tunes to go through, this particular particular remix could ravage any dance floor. Also props to Peacetreaty who made the original track and played here in Honolulu last Wednesday.

Thanksgiving! Porter! Madeon! and Video of the Day #5!

Happy thanksgiving everyone! today we commemorate the day the settlers came over and killed all the native Americans and now we eat a lot of food. Or something like that. Anyway I wasn't able to make it home for Thanksgiving so last night I saw Porter Robinson at the Aloha Tower in Honolulu. It was a relly good time. The rave was somewhat small, only to stages, and I figure they lost a lot of people to the Afrojack show happening at the same time. I am a little bummed I missed Afrojack because at the last minute they added Peacetreaty to the lineup, and the from the videos it looks like it was MASSIVE. That being said, I am really glad I got to see Porter. While Afrojack might be more popular, in my eyes (or ears) Porter has more talent. I get a little sick of the Dutch house because it seems a little repetitive sometimes. Porter's music has a lot of different flavors and melodies. He also really killed it last night! This guy is not just a producer, he can really mix better than a lot of live DJs I have seen. At no point did I feel like he was just shuffling an Ipod, he was engaged with the crowd and blew all the little raver's brains out.

Now that I have blabbed on about Porter again, I will move on to today's featured artist: Madeon. Madeon is only 17 and he is already becoming one the most respected artists on the scene. He is absolute fire on the Novation pad, and if you don't know what I mean by that watch the video below. I would kill to see Madeon and he would kill me right back, but he frequents the Europe shows and as far as I know he has only made it to New York in terms of the U.S.
Anyway, if you haven't checked this kid out yet, you better get on it.

Porter Robinson

Looks like I will spending my thanksgiving seeing Porter Robinson live here in Honolulu. I don't have money for a flight home so I will be missing my family, but I am discovering that this should be a pretty sweet replacement. Afrojack is actually playing a show here the same night... but listening to Porter lately has really swayed my vote and I have heard he is incredible live. Coming from sources who have seen both Afrojack and Porter, they have recommended the latter. Here is an example of this guys work, I feel he is definitely on the rise.

Video of the Day! #4

Not many of people have heard of the Swedish electro pop duo Staygold, but they are pretty rad. They only have a few songs that I am aware of and they don't seem all that popular. I love this song though and it even includes Robyn and Spank Rock! This looks like one crazy show.

Pantyraid

Pantyraid is the brainchild of aspiring electronic artists Martin Folb (MartyParty) and Josh Mayer (Ooah). The group met on the West Coast and had an instant bond of electronic style. Their music cannot fully be classified in to one genre, but draws from hiphop, glitch, and dubstep to name a few. I really enjoy the melodic harmony combined with hard hitting beats. The drop in this song is particularly impressive. Pantyraid has only graced us with one album "The Sauce" and a record with the songs "Beba" and this track "Get the Money". We will be paying close attention to the much awaited next release. For now enjoy this!

Secret Stash!

Every now and then I will be posting songs that I consider rare finds. As you can see by the roughly 1000 views on youtube, Lightwaves has not been fully discovered yet. I really dig the retro, robotic sound. It reminds me of Daft Punk to be sure.

Hip Hop break

Del has been killin for a while now. From the Deltron to Del tha Funkee Homosapien to the Gorrilaz. His lyrics are on point. I really dig the scifi vibe of Deltron. He truly is a mastermind.

Daaamn!! Nerds make the best electronic music. Take deadmau5 for example. Not many know about Database, but they are really on to something. So soulful and funky.

Hip Hop Holiday

I know this is not electronic music, but if you are like me, you celebrated your Veterans Day weekend listening to some good hip-hop. The best type of hip-hop in my opinion is the real stuff. Wiz Khalifa or Lil Wayne may be fun to hear at a party, but this is the raw and unfiltered, not silenced, scripted or auto tuned by a label stuff. I have been listening to Immortal Technique for some time now. He is a rapper unlike any other. Born in Lima, Peru and growing up in Harlem, New York, I.T. has seen a lot of shit and went through a rebellious childhood that landed him in a cell for a year. Upon his release, he began studying political science, which is clearly reflected in his rhymes. I.T. has some of the most politically intelligent raps, often times filled with anger and what many would call conspiracy theory. You don't have to agree with his ideologies to know that he has talent though. Learning his style by battling his way to the top in underground freestyle contests, he has developed a unique flow and poetic rhyme schemes. Many may be familiar with his classic "Dance with the Devil" track, but most of his music remains underground. I hadn't heard much from technique in the last 2 years, and I recently discovered that he was in Afghanistan and Columbia working to build a school and a farm prior to the release of his new album. Check out this new track. He is still going strong and shedding light on many of the fucked up things going on today.

Video of the Day #2

A little about myself

I thought I should present my music as a little background at the beginning of this blog. I have been DJing since about 2007, however I did not really have any gigs or take it all that seriously up until about 2009. I am from Olympia Washington, where the electronic music scene is mostly contained within high school kid's basements or should I say bassments. In other words there are not really any clubs and you have to drive an hour north to Seattle or further for a rave. I have DJed many gigs in Olympia, house parties, dances, benefits, shows and even weddings. Since moving to Honolulu, it has been hard finding a gig because when I came here I knew nobody, and there are plenty of DJs here already. Also it has been hard finding the time to put my mixes out there because of school and other activities. Nevertheless I would be interested in any sort of gig to possibly get my name out. Here is my soundcloud complete with all the recent mixes I have done. Please take a chance to listen. This is not just an advertisement but rather an idea of who I am musically and who will be posting for the rest of this blog. If you like what you hear in my mixes then you will probably like the music I continue to post on here.

Christian The Lion x GLITCHDICK live at Summer Wonderland

As of August 17th, I have moved to Honolulu Hawaii to attend the University of Hawaii @ Manoa. As soon as I got here, I was exposed to the rising electronic dance music scene. There are many DJs that frequent the Honolulu club scene and even a few local producers that have a decent sound. There is however, one who stands above the rest, at least in my ears. I bring you dubstep producer: Glitchdick also known as Christian the Lion. Many have not heard these names before, but it should only take one listen to do the trick. This video comes from Summer Wonderland, a rave at a local waterpark called Wet & Wild. These raves happen throughout the year. I was actually at this rave and missed Glitchdick's performance but was lucky enough to see him at the next one, Haunted Wonderland. I think this video gives the perfect look into the Oahu rave scene and Glitchdick's music. Enjoy!

The Big Bang

Blaaaauuuu!
Out of thin air a magical musical mystery blog is spawned. You will find pounding bass, artists fresher than a fetus, and the most amazing mixed bag that you will never want to take your hand out of. Yes this is a new electronic music blog. I hope you enjoy.
